SDSU second in nation to offer LGBT major

San Diego State University will begin offering an undergraduate degree in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender studies next year.

School officials say SDSU will become only the second college in the nation to offer a major in the field.

“It’s definitely a growing area of scholarship and is taken very seriously, especially at the graduate level,” said Jennifer Ruark, a deputy managing editor at the Chronicle of Higher Education, who has tracked the evolution of LGBT studies.

“At many places, these classes are part of the gender studies or women’s studies majors at the undergraduate level.”

SDSU has offered a minor in LGBT studies since 2009.

The university received approval late last week from the Chancellor’s Office of the California State University system to offer the major. It will begin accepting students into the program in spring 2012.

“We had about 30 students minoring in LGBT studies every year,” said Esther Rothblum, professor of women’s studies and the LGBT studies academic adviser. “We had so many courses on LGBT issues in so many departments, a group of us got together to put together a major.”

LGBT News in California (10/2011)

SAN DIEGO—Two leading Republican contenders for mayor of America’s eighth-largest city are openly gay, and voters have barely noticed. It doesn’t come up at campaign appearances or in local news coverage

The mayoral race comes as voters nationwide are increasingly willing to elect gays to public office and as Republicans shift their energies from hot-button social issues to bread-and-butter questions about the size and role of government in shaping the economy.

A nationwide Gallup poll in June showed 67 percent of voters surveyed would elect a gay president, up 12 percentage points from four years ago. The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund says the number of openly gay officeholders nationwide doubled in the last four years to about 500. They include Annise Parker, a Democrat who was elected mayor of Houston in 2009.

Personal Experience;

-being looked at because I wore my bestfriend’s girl skinny jeans and being assumed I am Gay! Even if I was NOT Gay, why make that automatic assumption?

AB 9, authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) and co-sponsored by LGBT equality organizations, seeks to create a safer school environment for California students

SACRAMENTO - The Senate yesterday approved Seth’s Law (AB 9) in a 24-14 vote. Seth’s Law is designed to address the pervasive problem of school bullying by providing California schools with tools to create a safe school environment for all students.
The bill is authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) and co-sponsored by a coalition of organizations advancing LGBT equality, including Equality California, the ACLU of California, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Gay-Straight Alliance Network, and The Trevor Project.

Over the past several months, “Seth’s Law” has raised an important discussion about the need to help schools protect LGBT students and other vulnerable youth from bullying. While California already prohibits school harassment, schools often do not have the tools or knowledge to adequately protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and others from bullying, which remains a serious issue across state and the rest of the nation. Students, parents, and school employees often don’t know what the rules are or what to do if bullying occurs.
In a recent national survey, nine out of 10 LGBT students reported being harassed at school. The problem persists in California as well, with LGBT students reporting significant harassment. The California Safe Schools Coalition reported in 2010 that 42% of California students who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual and 62% who identify as transgender said they had been harassed at least once based on gender non-conformity.
According to the California Healthy Kids Survey, 27% of students who reported harassment based on actual or perceived sexual orientation said they missed school at least one day during the past 30 because they felt unsafe. Increased truancy rates lead to a lack of funding for schools.

Hello Everyone

Welcome to the California LGBT Tumblr,

This page is welcome to anyone who would like to follow, We created this blog for various purposes that are listed on the right side of this post.

If you feel we should add more, than simply send us a question or comment our way in the “Ask” column.

We saw this idea on (fuckyeahgaycouples.tumblr.com), they showed followers the NYC Blog, so I said “I give NY credit for making that beautiful idea, so we should do one to”

(Its not stealing, since we obviously credited both blogs)
